Hey guys, y'all ready fo' this?
1. Guess what our #1 selling piece has been this year?
Need another clue...?
Yep, these pantyhose are officially the hottest pantyhose of the year, and a sharkie staple.
Which reminds me, I should probably get on to designing the hottest pantyhose of 2016...
2. So the other day I went on the internet to see what was up...
Found this little gem:
Although I do love it that whoever did this thought to themselves "Now what kind of people really hate women's legs wrapped in tight shiny fabric...? Ooooh, I know, MEN!"
3. Couples who catsuit together...
He's a keeper.
4. Interesting fact that not many people know - the first time I did a pair of galaxy leggings, the Blue one to be precise, I tried it on a girl and asked her what she thought. She told me that she thought they were boring.
I decided I wouldn't do them (because, well, I'm a little sensitive to criticism). A while later I tried them on another girl, just because they were sitting around - and she loved them.
So I changed my mind.
Turned out it was a good idea.
I heard a rumour that there might be a Teal Galaxy coming...
5. Speaking of good ideas - I wonder if making this Rainbow Galaxy Long Sleeved Bodycon Dress would be one (i.e. a good idea)?
How did Bob the Builder get into that photo?
Can he fix it?
6. Great news - I have been working on some really awesome swimsuits that I know you guys are going to love. (Because awesome swimsuits are our jam - in fact, one of many jams we have).
We are associated with one piece swims (like these) but recently I have worked on some sweet two pieces that are fully reversible (as in Inside Out Bikinis). So if you are planning on buying swimwear in the next few months .... DON'T DO IT UNTIL YOU SEE THESE!!!
Really. You won't regret it.
7. So I wanted to address an issue that comes up every so often.
BM started off in a little kitchen table in Brisbane, Australia. And we have our HQ in Brisbane (we actually have three sites here).
As most of you guys know, last year we opened our first operation in Los Angeles. Predictably, lots of sharkies in the US, and in particular in California were really happy about it. I know lots of girls in LA understood the extent to which we were going out on a limb trying to make our US operation work, and they have supported us in a truly amazing way since day one (I know that sometimes it's been rocky ride, but we definitely appreciate the support!)
However, it's a crazy world we live in, and it seems that no matter what you do, someone is going to be upset about it, and let you know in no uncertain terms.
Oh, don't worry darling, I haven't.
You see, people misunderstand, Brisbane is not our roots, Australia is not our roots. The Sharkie community is our roots. And the Sharkie community is... well, wherever Sharkies are! You see, we didn't start off Australian and then became global - we have always been global!
I walked around Brisbane in the early days, going from shop to shop with a bag full of leggings and a heart full of unwarranted optimism, trying to get the Brisbane fashion scene to welcome me into the fold. Needless to say, that didn't happen. They just weren't interested.
But you know who was interested? Girls who owned too many tights. Girls who saw my very first ever collection and fell in love with it. Girls who saw the first ever pair of Galaxy leggings and decided then and there that this was the kind of stuff they were going to be wearing for the rest of their lives. Probably, girls just like you - wherever the hell you happen to be.
And they would email me:
"Hi, I love you leggings! Can I get some? I live in London..."
"Hi, I love you leggings! Can I get some? I live in Sydney..."
"Hi, I love you leggings! Can I get some? I live in Chicago..."
"Hi, I love you leggings! Can I get some? I actually live just around the corner from you..."
You see, it was the GLOBAL Sharkie community that supported BM in the early days and it is the GLOBAL community that continues to do so!
So please, don't be surprised if our company structure reflects the global nature of our community. We make clothes in Brisbane, Australia, but we also make clothes in LA, California - heck, we even make clothes in Milan, Italy! And I'm totally cool with that. (That means that in theory, you can go triple BM and get something made on three different continents!)
And as we grow, assuming our little US adventure succeeds (which is by no means guaranteed...) we will become even more global. And this is a good thing! No, an AWESOME thing!
I'm thinking BM UK, BM Europe, BM South America, BM *insert where you live here*.
SHARKIEHOOD KNOWS NO BORDERS!
Embrace it. :)
8. Gym clothes update!
Do your gym leggings have phone pockets in them? More importantly - do they make Daniel Craig look at your awesome phone case?!
No? If you wear gym leggings that don't have phone pockets - then let me introduce you to your next awesome decision. :)
9. Sharkies be like:
10. I think I need to contact the people at Guinness who write the book of records and ask them if they have a category for -
'Most Ridiculously Long Time Between Showing Girls a Product and Actually Allowing Them To Buy It'
Because we got dat. (It's the shirt on this dude here...)
Looks even better on the ladies (like most things).
11. A few girls have been asking me what the future of Black Milk is in terms of the fun stuff that we have done in the past. Are we going to keep doing it in the future? The answer is yes (yay). We are going to keep doing all this fun stuff in the future, but first I just really want to make sure we get the basics right! Because... sometimes we don't. :)
I want to get great products that girls fall in love with, with great quality and get it out to you in a great amount of time. (Not a ‘great amount of time', but an amount of time where you will say “great I got this quickly!”) It is really challenging, the fashion industry is a crazy industry and getting it right is a challenge. We operate over two different continents, we’ve got BM HQ in Brisbane, Australia, and BMLA. Getting it right and making sure everyone gets what they want at the right time is not easy!
So, my number one priority above anything else is making sure we’re creating beautiful clothes, with great quality, and getting them out to you in a good amount of time. I think everyone would agree with that. After all, there’s no use having beautiful icing if you don’t have a yummy cupcake underneath it (although, if I'm honest, that still actually sounds delicious).
Ok so what are we going to be doing? We are also looking at our events schedule as well, we’re definitely doing SharkieCon this year in Australia (Woot! Woot!) I love the idea of a travelling SharkieCon where each year it’s in somewhere different, so whether that be SharkieCon USA, SharkieCon Europe, SharkieCon South America, SharkieCon... wherever! We can even vote on it, and go “where do we want to go?” So girls can vote on where they think the next one could be - and then you can plan your holiday around that! That’d be super fun.
We also do want to have lots of little events. Gym events, swim events – we’ve got some really great swimsuits that we’d love you guys to have the opportunity to try on, so we’ll probably have some events down at the beach (it's going to be so much fun!). So yes, we will keep doing those fun little things that make Black Milk unique.
So, don’t worry about it. Yes we are focusing on the basics, but we are also going to be making a couple of changes, (which I’ll tell you about a little bit later!) - we want to have a great system that really works for you and is a lot more fun.
Watch this space! :)
12. Sharkie kisses to all who rep the drip. xx Byeeeee!
Hey guys, AC here with some VERY. EXCITING. NEWS. Brace yourself….
ON WEDNESDAY 25 MARCH WE’RE RELEASING BLACK MILK SUNGLASSES.
They’re called Peeps, and they look a lil’ something like this:
Excited?! Yeah you are. But we’re just getting started. There are so many reasons why sunnies in general are made of pure awesome, including but not limited to…
So, sunnies are amazing. But, I hear you ask, “what makes Black Milk sunnies super-extra-gotta-have-‘em amazing?”
Well, to start with, the quality is through the roof. The frames are made from cellulose acetate, which is lightweight, mad flexible, hypoallergenic, wicked strong, and made from renewable resources because that is how we roll.
Our lenses are made from this stuff called a CR39 compound, which is basically the most scratch-resistant material you can make lenses from. They’re transparent to you and opaque to UV light, meaning you can actually see while protecting your eyes from that hate-orb in the sky we mentioned earlier.
And top it all off, the Peeps are all hand-made in Japan. The Japanese have been renown for making top-notch eyewear for more than a century, and the peeps who make our Peeps use the same traditional techniques – like tumbling the frames in woodchips to polish ‘em. Made in Japan means Made to Perfection, and we’re pretty big on that.
But as if we’d stop there.
That cellulose acetate stuff is amazing at holding super bright colours, so we went right ahead and infused the frames with our fav prints. And they look uh-may-zinggg. You can’t get these prints on sunnies anywhere else, making these as original as it gets.
And did I mentioned they look freakin’ boss? No? Well, they do.
Remember: the Peeps will go live at 9am AEST on Wednesday 25 March 2015 right here: for $199AUD. They will be limited edition, so get your ninja fingers ready because you don’t want to miss ‘em.
See you on release day.
The solitary figure stepped into the room. Before her flickered a computer screen, it's dull lit screen hinting at the potential within. In the glass her pretty face reflected back at her, challenging her, doubting her.
She approached it. Hesitation. It had been so long, would she even be able to remember how to type? She sat down at the keyboard, like an old grandmaster at a chessboard. Memories flooded back. Doubt, fear, desire, passion and curiosity curled and blended into a sickeningly potent ball of emotion that drove her forward. And in that moment, she knew what she had to do.
She needed to blog.
She gently stroked the keyboard, breathed in sharply, and began to type....
1. I DID A THING!!!
It started off like this:
Then became like this....
We added women... (so much better).
Yep, the first BM coffee shop is open. The coffee is so good....
We also have the yummiest breakfast cups, which I helped design! This was my first attempt:
It was delicious, in case you were wondering.
So if you're in Brisbane - come down and get yourself an AMAZING latte.
I drink about 20 lattes a day. Apparently that's way too many.
2. Q: WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH SHARKIECON THIS YEAR?!
A: Good question. Well, I have good news, and bad news.
The bad news is that we're not looking at doing Sharkiecon Vegas or Sharkiecon Europe this year. :(
I'm sorry, I really am. I have been to every sharkiecon we have ever had, and I have loved every one.
But... I guess I really feel like this is a time when we need to get 100% focused on what we have to do best - make great clothes, and post them out. It sounds simple, but we actually have a long way to go to do it really well! We face a lot of challenges and we're not doing as well as we need to. I really want to just get the basics right first before we party. I feel like this year we are going to have our hands full just working to make BM a great clothing company, and so some of these other things we love to do are going to have to (hopefully temporarily) take a break.
Now the good news - Sharkiecon Aus will still be happening! It's a lot easier for us logistically, and we feel like we can do a great job of the event, and still keep doing what we do best.
More good news... you can still expect lots of Black Milk events! Gym events, swim events, pool parties, collection launch parties, eat-all-the-yummy-food parties, pop up sales, sample sales, live art... and much more.
So, sorry again for the bad news, I know a lot of you guys were really looking forward to those Sharkiecons, but fingers crossed we will come back in 2016 with something even bigger and better for you.
Thanks for understanding. :) Hug it out?
3. Okay, more good and bad news.
I've known Captain Cam for probably... 6 years now? And ever since he has had a dream of living and working in London. I wondered if he would lose that dream as time went on working for BM in Brisbane.
And this year he made the decision to take a leap of faith and make it happen. Like I said, good and bad news. Good because you don't ever want to die wondering "what if...?" (and Cam's definitely not the type of guy to do things by halves and regret it). Bad because that means stepping away from all the incredible work he has done at BM.
So although at one level, it kind of sucks, I can honestly say that I'm genuinely happy for the guy. I know the thrill of stepping out to pursue a crazy dream, and it's awesome that he's taking the plunge. Plus, as I think we all know, Cam has so much talent to burn that I think success at whatever he chooses to work on is pretty much in the bag.
I could blab on about how much Cam has done for the BM community but those of you who have spent time with him already know. No matter what - tired, hungry, working too much - if you were a Sharkie, he had time for you. If you think I'm being cliched, I'm not, this guy took caring about people to a whole new level.
So bon voyage Captain Cam, and thanks for building something truly great.
So here, for your viewing pleasure, is a photo montage of the best of Handsome Cam [cue music]:
(p.s. If you want to show some appreciation... I'd suggest grabbing yourself a sweet phone case from The Dairy, they're very cool. ;)
3. Black on top or floral on top...?
4. So a big thing that a lot of girls have been looking forward to is a much better range of BM swims.
Me too. :) In fact, I am told that there are quite a few girls who have taken to their BM swims with a pair of scissors and have made something totally new and awesome! (Please post pics on Facebook, I need to see them!)
So let me give you some good news: THERE ARE LOTS MORE SWIM CUTS ON THE WAY! Including some really cool new two pieces.
I feel a beach party coming on....
p.s. Even when I'm designing modern two piece cuts, those old 80s one piece cuts still keep creeping their way back in . :o
Lol, not sure if this will ever happen.
5. One of the things I get asked about a lot is the Sophia James label.
For those of you who don't know - a few years ago I started a label called Sophia James. It was an uber-cool label that really focused on design, and I personally loved it.
A lot of people worked really hard to make it work - but it didn't. After losing a lot of money, we shut it down. Gone.
But - it seems - not forgotten.
Sophia James became something that meant a lot to a lot of girls, and they missed it. How could you not miss a label that made clothes like this?!
Rest assured, I haven't forgotten Sophia James. I still love it, and I still want to design for it! This year you can expect a few Sophia James pieces to sneak into Black Milk collections, and , in time, we may see a come back. :)
6. A little while ago I invented a character to compete in popularity with Mr. Shark.
We all love Mr. Shark... so why not invent another cool character?!
So I did. I created an awesome new character. I called him Senor Snake. It was basically me with some pantyhose on my hand putting on a really sketchy voice.
No one really liked Senor Snake.
I have no idea why.
8. This is adorbs.
I am thinking of doing one last galaxy print... we have already done eleven of them! One last one and then we're done. :) Probably.
9. So you are probably familiar with the legendary (yes, legendary, for they speak of it by the fireside on many a cold winter's night...) Cthulhu swimsuit:
But did you know that the original Cthulhu swimsuit featured a picture of H. P. Lovecraft...?
Yes it did! I decided to remove it because it looked a little creepy with a dude on your belly when you are poolside. I filled up the space with octopus like tentacles .... because that's much less creepy.
Check out those fingernails!
10. Thanks for reading my blog post - stay glamorous, my darlings!
Hey Guys! Bonnie here. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Black Milk's resident photographer.
Late last year I got the chance to visit our new Los Angeles HQ for a few days after Sharkiecon in Vegas. I somehow managed to convince jL and Cam, to let me organise a street style shoot in the super cool, grungy Downtown area - right where our HQ is located. This is how one of my favourite streetstyle shoots came together.
First let me introduce our little team for the day! Our 3 beautiful models were Jayde, Grace & Cheyenne. Maddie, our fab shoot producer, also happened to be in LA after SharkieCon - most of you probably already know Maddie from our BMHQ in Brisbane! Our Makeup Artist for the day was the amazing Angie, Emma stepped in as our stylist extraordinaire, and Bianca was my fab photo assistant.
And we can't forget our newest male model…..ahem.
This is how our day started out...I think you call it organised chaos?!
First out of hair and makeup was the lovely Grace, so it was time hit the streets around BMLA.
Then our second model, Cheyenne was ready to roll. That meant it was time for the whole team to set out on our epic afternoon of shooting around the arts district in LA.
To be totally honest with you guys, we actually had no real plans for the afternoon, we just wanted to get out and be inspired by the LA streets. It turned out that no plan was the perfect plan, because there's so much amazing street art around! It definitely wasn't hard to find great locations.
It was also hot….so very hot! You'd think being Aussies we'd be used to it, but nope - we were sweating it out. jL did buy about 10 ice creams….buuut he pretty much ate them all himself. It's a tough job being jL ;)
We did steal a couple to shoot with, though!
I've gotta say though, one of the highlights of my day was definitely putting the bossman to work.
After taking a quick break for lunch, we headed back out to explore even more amazing street art.
Totally normal street style attire right??
That bag? FULL of shoes! And it wouldn't be a Black Milk shoot without a selfie or two...
Later in the afternoon lovely LA talent Jayde joined us for some extra fun shots.
We just kept finding more and more incredible places to shoot.
We finished our day down in the LA river. I've always thought it would be incredible to shoot there, because it's such an iconic LA location. And it did not disappoint.
All in all, it was such a fantastic experience to be able to shoot in LA. We had an amazing day, I absolutely love this place and can't wait to get back and do it all again ;)
T'was the week before Christmas and all through HQ, the team totally were stirring, getting ready to start anew.
That's right friends, the year's coming to an end. The Black Milk team are tieing up loose ends, packing your end-of-year orders, and eating our body weight in gingerbread. But before we bail for the holidays (we'll be out of the office from December 25 to January 1) let's take a look at the 14 best Black Milk moments from 2014.
Pull up a chair and grab a rumball, 'cuz this year has been killer.
If this years' photoshoots and last years' photoshoots were to date, people would talk. They'd say 2014 was waaay out of 2013's league and while 2013 had their good points (Adventure Time, anyone?), 2014 is just on a whole other level. I would have to humbly disagree. 2014 isn't out of 2013' s league, 2014 is playing a totally different ballgame.
This year we went big. We created a magical warehouse, a pulp horror movie, faraway lands, epic battles, and so much more. We spilled dirt in people's cars (sorry, Carla), turned pineapples into dragon eggs, ruined shoes (sorry, Charli), turned the office into a literal jungle, tested people's innate fear of height (sorry, Bonnie), and generally did the kind of crazy nonsense that results in us applogising to a lot of people. But we got some amazing shots, told some incredible stories, and were hopefully able to share the Black Milk magic with you guys better than we have ever done before.
Q: What do you get when you invite 1000 girls to swing by your place and try on some clothes before they're released.
A: We'll let you know as soon as we've recovered.
'Preview Night' is probably too tame a term for what happens when our community rolls in to check out a new collection before we go live. A big, huge thank you to everyone who tried on gear with us - it was a blast and we can't wait to throw more pre-release parties for you all next year.
Imagine if you had a place where you could check out local artwork, try on amazing clothes, buy awesome clothes, maybe meet the peeps who created them, and generally hang out with like-minded awesome people in a super cool space. Well there totally is, and we set it up in 2014. You go, 2014.
Our concept will open to the public next year, so get ready. Oh, and yeah it will totally have Wi-Fi. You'll never need to leave.
Our Cafe will officially open next year too (keep an eye on our BMHQ Facebook page for details!) but throughout the setup, we've learned one thing:
Coffee is like the kick in the face you never knew you wanted or needed, but now suddenly can't get enough of.
The brew our cafe kids are serving up is AMAZING, and we are super keen to open to the public. You can try on gear in our concept space, drink coffee, try on some more gear, drink more coffee, drink a little more coffee, discover see sounds, try some more gear on, have another coffee, chat (very quickly and with much enthusiasm) to jL, have another coffee, and try really hard not to have a heart attack.
GUYS. WE OPENED IN LA. WE'RE A LITTLE BRISBANE LABEL. WHO OPENED IN LA. That's way cool. Our rad team in Downtown Los Angeles are shipping orders throughout the united states direct from our headquarters. They're answering emails, holding preview nights of their own, and keeping the Black Milk party going all the way over there.
We're even making gear in LA, meaning 2014 was the year Black Milk actually began world domination. ...So who has the schematics for the Death Star? Because, hey, we all know where this is heading.
Gold Coast. Sydney. Brisbane. San Diego. We absolutely smashed the convention circuit this year, appearing not only at the king-of-cons, San Diego Comic Con, but THREE Supanova Pop Culture Expo events. It was beyond incredible to meet people who had jumped wholeheartedly on the nerd-train with us, and we can't believe it's more than 100 days until the next Supanova (not that we're counting...or anything)!
Or should I say SharkieCons. We hit Majorca, Las Vegas, and our hometown Brisbane with the most insane parties ever. Europe, America, and Australia all got a taste of the Sharkie madness when we rolled on up with our dozens and dozens of fabulous people, often not wearing pants, and turned an otherwise normal weekend into the most unforgettable three days ever.
We cruised at sunset in the mediterranean, we took over the Bellagio fountain, we partied in a museum alongside the exhibits, and got to hang out with over 800 truly exceptional babes. If you were one of them - you rock. If not - see you next year!
Legs. Shoes. Legs. And shoes. They just go together. So the fact that our BFFs over at Solestruck are keen for us to keep creating crazy shoes with them is such a big deal for us. Our prints and their wicked styles, hooking up with Solestruck has been a match made in heaven. We might even start shopping for rings soon...
Because we could. Because Spirithoods are awesome. Because OMG FLUFFY. Featuring the gorgeous @okidokiokami <3
If anyone were doubting the sheer nerdiness present in the Black Milk offices before this year, they must doubt no longer. More Star Wars, more Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Disney, DC Comics, and mooooreeee.
Creating rad gear for stylish nerds is one of our favourite things, because while there's heaps of nerdy clothes out there it's mostly t-shirts and lunchboxes. If you want to rock something nerdy that hugs your bod with a pair of killer heels, there's significantly less on offer. And we think everyone should be able to express what they're into and still look rockin'.
BRIDGE TO BRISBANE
We love our little city. It's not as exciting as some other places in the world, but it's our home, and it's been good to us. So when the city holds events for a good casue like the Bridge to Brisbane, we're always keen to get involved. We ran in support of Brain Child, a charity that directly benefits one of our team members and was set up by his mum, and even though the vast majority of us kind of stumbled over the line as opposed to running over it, we made it happen and hopefully helped a few people out. Pretty sure that classifies as a really good day.
1 MILLION INSTAGRAM FANS
To put the big '1 million' in perspective, Black Milk did start as one dude in his kitchen with no idea how to sew. The fact that a whole million people think "yeah you guys are pretty cool" is kind of insane for us, and we kind of love it.
Who else has a community that secretly finds out all the employee's names and works out a secret santa and stalks everyone online and sends us actual real awesome gifts from around the world?! No one else. Just us. Because, for some reason, you guys seem to like us a bit. You like us enough to send our crazy-cat-lady social media manager a giant Pusheen plush. That's a lot of love, right there. What can we say to that, other than we're absolutely humbled and so incredibly lucky to know all of you. We hope we can repay you guys in party funtimes, ok?
Yeah that's right. You. Reading this right now. Whether you rocked out with us at a meet-up, hung out with us online, or are just reading this blog for the first time and thinking "what on earth are these people on, and where can I get some?" - you're the reason we're able to keep doing this. So cheers for being amazing (and maybe a little bit insane).
I kinda wish it were 2114 so I could talk about 100 more amazing things that happened in the wonderful world of Black Milk over the last year...but it's not. So I can't. Which means it's time to say goodbye to 2014, from all of us here at Black Milk Clothing. Thanks for all the good times, and we'll catch you fabulous people in 2015. Bring it on.
Hey guys, AC again with another Lauren Carney Art Project update! If you missed our announcement about this super cool project, you can find it here.
So about that update. Um…
Lauren is powering through this humongous wall, turning it into what may actually be the most captivating battle between pirates and mermaids EVER. THIS IS SO EXCITING!!
I caught up with Lauren for a quick chat about her intense week of painting…
AC: So what are you working on this week?
Lauren: Still having a crack at the mermaids. The line work has proved to be pretty tedious, but that’s mostly because I’ll have like four coffees a day and get crazy jittery hands. It’s an internal battle but I’ll totally come out on top.
AC: Do you have a favourite mermaid?
Lauren: Do you know what, at the moment I really like the selfie mermaid. She’s like “I’m a hot babe and everybody knows it!”
AC: How close to finishing the mermaid scene are you?
Lauren: I think I’m probably about three days off. The SharkieCon ladies ruled the floor over the weekend, so I wasn’t working on it during SharkieCon – I think I’ll finish it mid this week.
AC: So once you’re done with the mermaids, what’s the next thing you’ll be working on?
Lauren: The battle! The battle between the mermaids and the pirates, with the kraken, that will be happening. I’m pretty excited to get that started because they’re all riding koi fish and jellyfish and it’s going to look super cool.
Did I already say “wow”? I think I did. Let me say it again: wow. I really hope we make a piece out of this print because I need it on me.
Our next update is gonna be super exciting because it will be after SharkieCon, and this ridiculously awesome concept space will be open for business. Ooooooh how exciting! I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
Stay tuned, ladies and gents.
Hey guys! AC here, with some super cool info about a huuuge project going on at BMHQ in Brisbane RIGHT MEOW!
This is Lauren.
Totes adorbs, right? Right. Also, mega talented. You might remember this backdrop from our Witch Please collection:
Yep, she drew that.
And that. Love ya work, Lauren.
In fact, we love her work so much we asked if she’d paint a wall for us. Not just any wall, either – an 11-metre-long wall in our brand new café and concept store.
I can hear you saying “whoa whoa whoa, back up a little there AC. Café?! Concept store? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!”
We’re opening a café and concept store. When? End of November, hopefully in time for SharkieCon. Why? World domination. But seriously, it's going to be a super cool space for awesome people to chill out, have amazing coffee, try on gear, buy gear, attend events like preview nights, take a million selfies, and just hang out with other people as fantastic as you are.
In jL’s own words...
“A place of energy, a place where you go in, and you think “I’m going back every day, because this is totally my jam”.”
We seriously can’t wait, and with Lauren on board for this huge mural commission…well, it’s all coming together. jL and Lauren sat down to figure out exactly what this gigantic space was going to be filled with. From what I’m aware, the conversation went a little like this:
Lauren: You like ocean things?
Lauren: Like mermaids?
James: Yeah! And battles!
Lauren: Mermaid battle?
James: YEAH. Mermaids vs Pirates?!
Then it was time to grab paints…
And get started!
A huge wall covered in mermaids engaged in an epic battle with pirates. Yep, it’s gonna be amazing.
I caught up with Lauren to have a chat to her about the mural and her favourite shiny things.
AC: Ok easy one to start with – favourite Black Milk piece?
Lauren: I would say my Princess Bubblegum Skater Dress, I wear that all the time.
AC: How do you feel working on this project?
Lauren: Really excited. Elated, actually. When James and I threw some ideas around I didn’t think I’d have so much creative freedom as this and the brief was incredible so yeah I think this is probably one of my favourite jobs I’ll ever do.
AC: How long is this going to take you?!
Lauren: In theory? Four weeks… but it might be more like six, since I’ve got to triple-layer the paint to get the colour I want. And that’s working every day. I’m trying to break down each piece, so I’ll spend a week on the mermaid scene, and the battle – hopefully that will be a week and a bit, and the pirates another week.
AC: When you’re faced with a project this big, what’s your motto?
Lauren: She’ll be right!
AC: So where do you want to see this project end up?
Lauren: I think James may have hinted it might be making an appearance on a piece? Which is pretty exciting. I think that would be awesome, to be honest.
Ok NOW I’m excited. Can’t wait to see the finished mural! We’re gonna keep you updated throughout the project, so keep your eyes peeled here for new posts: http://blog.blackmilkclothing.com/toomanytights/lauren-carney-art-project/
Until next time.
Love n’ stuff,
AC here, with something special from our latest release, Wrapped.
Wrapped is our very megical Christmas release, set in a crazy workshop filled with all sorts of wonderful nonsense. The reality...isn't actually that much different. The 'real' workshop is filled to bursting with amazing things and you know what? We'd love to show 'em to you.
This is your invitation to join us behind the scenes at Black Milk Clothing.
Wasn't that fun?! I wonder if jL ever actually signs the postcards that go out with your order...hmmmm....
Hey guys, AC here!
Guess what this Friday is going to be?! I mean, other than Friday, which is pretty awesome in itself (Pants off Friday, weekends, it’s generally just a good day) BUT TOTALLY NOT WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT.
I am, of course, talking about Halloween.
Now, it is true that we generally don’t celebrate Halloween here in Australia on the same scale as other places (lookin’ at you, USA). But I think the team here at Black Milk give it a darn good shot. In fact, I’d be bold enough to say it might be our favourite time of year… we get to dress up like lunatics and no one can say anything… What’s not to love?!
In the lead-up to the big day itself, I want to take a quick look at some of our (read: my) favourite Halloween-related moments of the past year.
#5 - THAT THING WITH THE DEM GUTS SWIMSUIT
Every so often, we bring a discontinued piece back. We don’t do it often (there’s so much rad NEW gear to make!) so it takes something preeeetty huge to make us do it. Like, say, reaching 1 million followers on Instagram. Or suddenly, inexplicably, receiving THOUSANDS OF PAGEVIEWS AND REQUESTS AND EMAILS ABOUT A PIECE WE RELEASED FOR HALLOWEEN LAST YEAR?!
Yeah. That happened. One little post set the whole thing off. Once we recovered from being baffled, we shifted gear from “what is going on?!” to “better re-release that…” Welcome back, Dem Guts swimsuit from Halloween 2013. You’re a time traveller now, congratulations.
#4 - SPOOKBOOK 2013
Our first collaboration with Lookbook.nu was incredible – you guys absolutely killed us with your costumes!
Have you entered this year’s comp yet?! Go here to submit your entry!
#3 - THE OFFICE HALLOWEEN PARTY
What did I tell you about Halloween being our fav time of year? The team goes all out and it is glorious.
#2 - IFL SCIENCE REPOSTING OUR HALLOWEEN 2013 GEAR?!
MORE Halloween 2013 gear getting love, this time from perhaps the coolest girl on the web – the lady who runs this amazing page. Do you have any idea how much we freaked out when we realised this was why our page was blowing up? The reaction was loud, and shrill, and very excited.
So yeah, our Facebook exploded. And yeah we sent out a million links to the Mechanical Bones catsuit. And YEAH we totally brought the discontinued Muscle and Bone catsuit back. More resurrected-from-the-dead Halloween gear! How appropriate.
#1 - YOU GUYS.
Do I even need to elaborate? No, but I will anyway.
You guys. YOU. GUYS. We say “It’d be cool if you showed us your Black Milk Halloween outfits” and you reply by giving us the most incredible, creative, intense hashtag ever (#bmhalloween – check it out). No one goes above and beyond like a Black Milk babe, and we love you for it.
You’re all incredible and I can’t wait to see what you come up with this year.
Peace, love, and Zombies.
