Ready for more tales of adventure in the land of fashion?
What a year it has been. It was certainly a big year for me. Let us pause and reflect (pause now... okay, now I reflect)
I began Black MiIlk Clothing in February of 2009. I vividly recall announcing the start of my new little venture, and then opening the newspaper and reading the following headline "AUSTRALIA OFFICIALLY IN RECESSION".
Hey, at least I wasn't selling sub prime mortgages.
To thwart this adverse news, I had a brilliant plan - I would sell all my clothes in US$. I planned to sell my clothes at a very reasonable price, and take the difference between the Australian dollar and the US$ as profit. Within 3 months the US dollar was at record lows against the Australian, and I was broke.
Looking back, I'm starting to think I caused the recession.
Anyway - this was the very first pair of leggings I sewed:
You will immediately notice:
1. Both legs are too short
2. The pattern on the right leg is upside down
(Hey, I'm a slow starter, alright?!)
However, despite this every girl who tried them on wanted to buy them. Which was super encouraging for me. So I kept going. Most of my early design were flops. Hardly anyone bought them, but enough did to encourage me to keep sewing. Here is a sampling of the early stuff:
If you can remember any of those styles - R-e-s-p-e-c-t! You go waaaay back. Thanks for sticking with me this far. Kiss kiss hug hug.
And then came the Gold Spartans and the Cages... and things really took off from there.
Nowadays, you can come round to my house and it will be packed out with Black Milk peeps - sewers, photographers, models, etc. Most of them with very strong opinions. E.g.
Me: "Hey guys, this is my latest style, what do you think?"
Everyone else: (Silence, crickets)
Me: "ummm... okay, I'll go and make something better."
Happens a lot, peeps. Sadly.
xx

p.s. Random fact of the day: I ate 16 mangoes yesterday. Really I did.
Let me just say this - Brisbane may not be the fashion capital of the world, but I'll bet they aren't eating mangoes in double figures in New York in January! In your face, NYC!
Okay, I'm off to pick more mangoes.
